8.0.4 UPDATE

Note: Make sure to name your nautlius with a nametag. They will despawn otherwise.

Nautilus ('nawt-i-luhs', meaning "Sailor") is an aquatic prehistoric creature that was included in the original Fossils and Archeology mod. It is a living fossil about one block long that spawns naturally in the world but can also be created by the player. The only other naturally spawning creatures are the coelacanth, sturgeon, and alligator gar. Upon death, they can drop empty shells and magic conches. Right-clicking a nautilus puts it into your inventory as an item.

Though they spawn naturally, they can also be created by the player through the culture vat. As they are marine cephalopods, they hatch from spawn that need to be placed in water by the player.

You can cook live nautilus in a furnace to whip up Sio-Chiu-Le, a Taiwanese snack.

BEHAVIOR

The nautilus is an aquatic mob that spawns naturally in the world. They spawn in shallow waters most often and rarely in deep waters. They will occasionally drop nautilus spawn which can be used to birth more nautilus'. Since they do not have sexes, the amount of nearby nautilus' do not affect the breeding probability. Their predators are mosasaurus, liopleurodon, spinosaurus, and sarcosuchus. When a predator or the player gets within 3 blocks of the nautilus, it will stop moving and attempt to hide in its shell and it will be invulnerable from all outside threats while doing so. They will return to their normal state when the predator leaves the area. The player can force the nautilus out of its shell by right-clicking it with a flint. They can only live in water, and when placed on land they will suffocate and die at a rate of half a heart a second.

Like the other living fossil mobs, they cannot be tamed, ordered, fed, or aged, given essence of chicken don't have moods or genders, and no interact with the toy. They also do not make sounds.
