Ancient Ferns are prehistoric plants that took the place of grass in the Cretaceous period. They can only be placed under leaves. They are a very reliable primary food source for herbivorous Mobs. Unlike the other plants, Ancient Ferns have a growth stage, from seedling to adult.
When hit, there is a small chance that you will receive back a Fern Seed. Be careful with water around the plant, as it will cause it to disappear.
Like most other things in the mod, they do not spawn naturally in the world.
Be very careful where you place it, as if it is placed in a forest it could potentially spread to other trees and cause lag.
Appearance
Ancient Ferns are plants that can grow to be slightly taller than one block. They are completely dark green. Like the other plants, they are a 2D texture. Whilst it's main use is for feeding dinosaurs, it can also be used to create a prehistoric landscape.
Obtaining
Ferns can be obtained by putting a Plant Fossil in an Analyzer. There is a rare chance that the Analyzer will give back Fossilized Fern Spores, which you then must put in a Culture Vat. Unless the Culture Vat fails and spawns a Failure Plant, it will then turn the Fossilized Seeds into normal Fern Spores which can be planted. They can also be obtained from mining permafrost.
Use
All dinosaurian herbivores of the mod will eat ferns, making them extremely useful as automated food resources. However, Ferns can only grow under leaves and will spread very quickly. If provided with the right habitat and needs, such as if it is grown in a forest covered with leaves, such as jungles, it can quickly and efficiently overrun the whole biome and potentially cause lag, so be careful where you put it. You can plant a fern seedling by right clicking Fern Seeds on a grass block under a leaf block.
